The art of storytelling is now reaching rural India. A unique initiative, called “Kahaani ki Dukaan” (a story shop), was recently launched at Gunehar village in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Behind the storytelling movement is the “Found on all fours” group, to take performing arts, including storytelling, theatre and poetry, to villages. It also aims at creating a library for children to inculcate reading habits among them and introduce theatre, where they could learn to perform these stories.
While shooting the story in this cozy Himalayan village, I was surprised by the hunger shown by villagers, especially the children, to learn how to tell their stories in a language and context, which is their own.
