Why are Northeast Indians Protesting Amended Citizenship Law

Northeast Indians on Sunday joined thousands of people from other parts of the country who have been protesting against a newly amended law on citizenship. While the others are calling the legislation discriminatory, protesters from the northeast are against granting citizenship to immigrants from neighbouring countries.

StoriesAsia visited the protesters from the northeast on the afternoon of December 22 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, to ask them why they have objections to allowing citizenship to immigrants.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 paves the way for non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to apply for citizenship.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
