Dispatch 39 | Cancer Patients Remain Stranded Without Treatment at Delhi Hospital

In the 39th video dispatch in the StoriesAsia On The Road series, our reporter met with a couple outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in southern Delhi. They were living in a temporary shelter made by the state government for patients and their relatives. Surprisingly, one of the top hospitals in the country as well as the South Asia region, the government-run autonomous hospital had closed down its entire out-patient department (OPD) despite knowing that numerous patients from across India, especially the ones with serious illnesses were there for treatment. This couple had come to the hospital to seek treatment for cancer.

** “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
