Dispatch 42 | As Domestic Violence Rises, Women Demand Closure of Liquor Store

For the 42nd video dispatch in the StoriesAsia On The Road series, our reporters met with a group of women who had gathered together to get a liquor store in the city of Noida in Uttar Pradesh state shuttered. The women stormed the wine shop, forcing it to shut down temporarily until police intervened. The women said that they and their husbands were out of jobs due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The protesting women said that the men were spending whatever little money was left to buy alcohol and that the re-opening of the liquor store in their locality was also resulting in an increase in cases of domestic violence.

** “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
