COVID-19 Lockdown Disrupts Lives of Special-Needs Children

There are millions of special-needs children in India, where all educational institutes have remained shut since a nationwide lockdown was announced on March 22 to “flatten” the Covid-19 curve. While most schools are holding online classes to carry on with this academic session, special children need much more than the ability to watch their teachers on a screen giving lessons.

To ask about what their needs are and what’s at stake for them due to this lockdown, we met with Ms Seema Vedantam, Director at Cornerstone India Foundation, which runs a school for special-needs children in the Greater Noida area of the National Capital Region. We also spoke to a parent of a special child to ask what needs to be done. Here’s what they said:
