Dispatch 26 | ‘We won’t Give You Ration, You’re Muslim,’ Woman Told

In this 26th video dispatch in the StoriesAsia On The Road series, our reporters came across volunteers who were distributing ration in Noida which falls within the National Capital Region of India. The volunteers identified themselves as part of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sena and the Navratan Foundation. One of them quite publicly, while speaking to our reporters, blamed Muslims from the Tablighi Jamaat sect for the spread of the novel coronavirus in India. This bias, the reporters were told, was reflected in the way they have been distributing ration. One woman described how she was refused ration because she was Muslim.

** “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
