Dispatch 30 | Fearing Starvation, Women Work on Farms to Earn Food Grains as Wages

In this 30th video dispatch in the StoriesAsia On The Road series, our reporters met with women farm labourers who were working for a farm owner they had no knowledge about or acquaintance with, and without any assurance for a monetary payment. They were promised food grains as their wages – which may not be uncommon practise in rural India. However, desperation for food caused by the ongoing nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak has undoubtedly made hundreds of such labourers highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

** “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
