Dispatch 5 | Stranded Workers Walk 500 KM to Return Home

For this fifth video dispatch in the StoriesAsia Caravan series, our reporters found a group of about 50 garment factory workers who were walking from the town of Rohtak in Haryana state to the city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh state. A distance of almost 500 kilometers. It would at least take them just a walking time of close to 100 hours to return to their homes, and that could mean many days of walking.

India has been under a 21-day curfew beginning midnight of March 24 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

* “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
