Dispatch 6 | Delhi’s Saviour of the Destitute

For this sixth video dispatch in the StoriesAsia Caravan series, our reporters were surprised to see one man’s initiative, where he(Veerji), along with a few volunteers, is feeding at least 10,000 homeless and stranded people every day in Delhi. Five thousand in the “Yamuna Pushta” area and the same number in the “Chandni Chowk” area. Many of these, unfortunately, are those who have been left to fend for themselves. Thousands of migrant labourers and the homeless have struggled to survive on Delhi’s streets after a curfew-like lockdown was declared across India on the midnight of 24 March 2020 owing to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Under such circumstances, when people have found themselves abandoned and cast away, this is perhaps the best civilian response in India to the COVID-19 crisis.

* “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
