Dispatch 9 | Half of Farmers’ Produce Drying Up

In this ninth video dispatch from our “On the Road” series, StoriesAsia reporters travelled to a village near the city of Meerut in India’s Uttar Pradesh state. They discovered that farmers were in deep trouble. It’s harvest season for some crops, including sugarcane and wheat, but farm labourers have either returned to their villagers or are unable to come to work. The ongoing COVID 19 crisis, which has resulted in an unprecedented 21-day nationwide shutdown coupled with the narrow window during which harvest and sowing happen in Northern India, could result in India’s rural economy going into a tailspin affecting millions of people.

* “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
