Dispatch 8 | Retailers say no to stocking up on Groceries

In this eighth video dispatch from our “On the Road”series, StoriesAsia reporter Rajan Raj found that retailers in the eastern city of Kolkata in India, even those from the informal sector, have decided to oppose consumers’ efforts to stock up on essential goods. One week into a 21-day lockdown that has affected supply chains of necessary items and triggered panic buying, this story truly sets an example during a period that has affected India’s 1.3 billion people like never before with thousands of migrants fleeing India’s cities and towns towards the countryside.

* “On the Road” is a new series by StoriesAsia on the Coronavirus outbreak where we bring you stories that help you respond to this ongoing historic pandemic. Using their vehicles, StoriesAsia journalists will travel around to bring you stories of not just pain and suffering but also healing and heroism.

StoriesAsia, a collective of independent journalists from 16 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, seeks to replace the present-day parade of faceless numbers with humanising narrative nonfiction – a largely ignored journalistic genre in the region.
